Asia-Pacific DME Forum 2023 to be held
India, Japan, and the United States, etc. participate to exchange information

“DME (dimethyl ether) is a long-term sustainable carbon-neutral energy source that can be synthesized based on renewable energy. “It is a fuel that can improve performance and emissions while maintaining the existing internal combustion engine system.”

The Asia-Pacific DME Forum was held at Hotel Onoma in Daejeon from October 26th to 27th, hosted by the Korea DME Association (Chairman Wonjun Cho, CEO of BioFriends Inc.).

Professor Choongsik Bae of KAIST, who presented the first day of the forum, said, "The 2023 edition of the IEA Energy Technology Outlook (ETP) diagnosed the feasibility of the Net-Zero scenario for the first time, and pointed out the lack of raw materials, incompleteness of supply chains, and investment imbalances by technology compared to this result by summing up the world's top policy goals, and recommended establishing an international trade network to distribute raw materials and renewable energy and increase investment."

In addition, various synthetic fuel power engines, such as e-Fuel, will contribute to achieving 2050 carbon neutrality in the transport sector by developing in a balanced manner along with battery electric vehicles and hydrogen electric vehicles. Carbon neutral fuel is essential as a high-energy density transportation power source and is indispensable for energy security as an energy distribution transport medium to overcome the concentration of renewable energy resources.

Jaewoo Jung, a senior researcher at the Korea Automobile Research Institute, said, "DME has similar physical properties to LPG, but it needs to be applied in a limited way due to reactions with low octane and rubber materials, and we have completed a 60,000km endurance test of DME-LPG mixed fuel application with a concentration of 5%mol of DME without changing the structure of cars of four models."

On this day, announcements were made on "India's DME Project" (Venkateshwaran Neelakantan), "Japan's DME Aerosol Market and Green DME" (Japan's Daisuke Ishikawa), "U.S. DME Project Progress Status" (CEO Bongjoo Shim, Worldwide, H&H), "e-fuel Green DME" (Chief Researcher Jung Jae-woo, Automotive Research Institute), "Energy Technology Outlook and DME" (Professor Bae Cho Sang-sik, KAIST), and "Carbon Neutral Low Carbon Compound (DME, Methanol) Project Promotion Status (CEO Cho Won-joon).

On the second day of the forum, a field trip program was held for BioFriends' Boeun DME plant in Chungcheongbuk-do and related equipment.

Chairman Wonjun Cho said, "With the acceleration of decarbonization and carbon neutrality, we have set up this meeting to share various information such as the current status of green DME and carbon dioxide capture and utilization technologies using low-carbon fuels, DME, and discuss new business models. Let's gather the will of Asia-Pacific-related countries to accelerate DME distribution and research and development to contribute to greenhouse gas reduction and carbon neutrality projects."
