Started development of low-carbon fuel technology using CO2 emitted from the cement industry
Consortium agreement ceremony held at Chungbuk Provincial Office on the 27th, successful research pledge

BioFriends Inc. (CEO Won-Jun Cho) is in charge of the overall lead agency in the 'Net-Zero Cement Industry Low-Carbon Fuel Technology Development' Contest, which captures carbon dioxide generated in the cement production process, chemically converts it, and applies CCU technology for the first time in Korea did it

A consortium led by three industrial affiliates such as Sungshin Cement Co., Ltd., Enertalk Co., Ltd., and Wooyang HC Co., Ltd., and research institutes funded by the Korea Energy Research Institute, Korea Petroleum Management Service, Korea Limestone Material Research Institute, and Korea Petroleum Management Service was selected to become the center of the cement industry in Chungcheongbuk-do. Leading CCU technology to produce methanol from CO2.

Local governments such as Chungcheongbuk-do (Governor Lee Si-jong) and Danyang-gun (Governor Ryu Han-woo) also actively participated in this project, and an agreement ceremony was held at the Chungcheongbuk-do provincial office on the 27th to successfully promote future projects and closely cooperate with cooperative projects.

The goal of this project is to apply CCU technology, which collects and chemically converts carbon dioxide generated in the cement production process, simultaneously collects fine dust and CO2 emitted from the cement production process, purifies it, converts it into synthetic gas, and builds a demonstration complex of more than 10,000 tons of methanol.

In particular, the government will convert methanol produced to DME (dimethyl ether), which is used as a high value-added clean compound or fuel, and carry out projects that use some blue hydrogen as private-led projects. At this time, the company plans to use unused energy sources and renewable DME (Renewable DME) as a DME produced from carbon dioxide. The project will cost 39 billion won (21 billion won in state funds, 3 billion won in local governments, and 15 billion won in private sectors) by 2025, and will be carried out as a research facility at Danyang Sungshin Cement Plant Site.

The amount of methanol imports in Korea is 1.8 million tons, which relies entirely on imports, and when developed, the effects of methanol import substitution and technology exports are expected.

An official from BioFrances explained, "If the domestic gas industry manufactures chemical conversion through CCU technology and rDME, which is used as LPG and mixed fuel, through the project, it will have a great ripple effect as it can be used not only for greenhouse gas reduction but also for related industries such as steel."

In addition, “We are expected to achieve the national greenhouse gas reduction goal through the establishment of a commercial project with an annual scale of 150,000 tons and a large-scale carbon dioxide capture industrial complex with an annual capacity of 2 million tons or more by 2030 by progressively promoting scale-up in the future. ” he explained.

Currently, Korea has announced carbon neutrality and national greenhouse gas reduction goals for 2030, and recently all industries are vying to announce that they will very quickly transform their industries and change the industrial ecosystem.

In particular, in industries such as cement and steel, the NDC target has been raised to 14.5% reduction compared to 2018, and the goal is to reduce 10.3 million tons of carbon dioxide in the CCUS sector (carbon capture, utilization, storage). The low-carbon fuel technology development project is expected to play a major role.
