“DME (dimethyl ether) and rDME (renewable DME) are attracting attention as low-carbon energy that realizes carbon neutrality.”

The Asia-Pacific Rim DME Forum 2022 was held at the Intercity Hotel in Daejeon on the 27th.

On this day, Won-jun Cho, president of the Korea DME Association, said in his greeting, “It is very regrettable that the international conference could not be held due to the COVID-19 pandemic after the 10th Asian DME Conference several years ago. However, we were able to witness the emergence of rDME in the energy market, such as the International DME Conference held in Switzerland this year.

Indonesia's Gundo Susiarjo, who gave a presentation first, said, "We are preparing a plan to develop energy substitutes, especially DME. In the future, as an alternative to LPG, DME is expected as an energy source to meet household energy demand.

DME has similar chemical and physical properties to LPG, and because of this similarity, existing LPG infrastructure such as cylinder storage can be utilized. DME is one of the alternative energy to reduce LPG imports, and DME equivalent to 3 million tons of LPG is needed by 2030.”

India's Vivek Dewan said, "India has set a plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2070 as part of a five-action plan that includes reducing emissions by 50% by 2030. We have announced five pledges: a total projected carbon emission of 1 billion tons by 2030, reducing the carbon intensity of the economy to 45%, and achieving a Net Zero goal by 2070.”

Indonesia's Indradjaja said, "The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources plans to promote a policy of replacing a significant amount of LPG imports with DME in the 'Energy Investment Project Plan'."

Japan's Daisuke Ishigawa said, "Currently, Japan uses DME, which is characterized by low toxicity, eco-friendly, and high solubility due to restrictions on use by CFC regulations, and is widely used as aerosol (for paint, cosmetics, and pesticides). Although research on DME for fuel has been actively implemented, the task of building infrastructure remains.

He then announced, "Japan's total demand for DME is about 10,000 tons per year, more than 90% of which is aerosol, most of which are used as foaming agents, and it is time to develop new value-added products."

Shim Bongjoo of the US said, “DME is a low-cost, low-carbon energy for petroleum diesel. DME is a cost-effective hydrogen carrier, and providing such green fuel to the rapidly expanding hydrogen fuel cell industry is straightforward.

DME can be combined with LPG to significantly minimize carbon strength as a clean combustion fuel, and the existing DME is transitioning to a renewable DME market. Global LPG suppliers are actively promoting the LPG+rDME project. The US rDME market needs to be diversified to address bio-based and carbon capture-based renewable DME production.”

Won-jun Cho, president of the Korea DME Association (CEO of BioFriends), said in an announcement of the "Domestic rDME Business and LPG-rDME Market," "BioFriends is recently building a 10,000-ton rDME production plant near Boeun Industrial Complex 1 in Chungbuk to gradually expand and distribute the domestic rDME market." We plan to collect CO₂ from a cement company in Danyang, Chungbuk, convert it to rDME, and gradually supply it as domestic agricultural and industrial fuel through LPG-rDME mixed verification project. In Europe and the United States, we have already started to produce about 300,000 tons of rDME in LPG industry. "Korea is also looking forward to the day when rDME is mixed and distributed to domestic farms and industrial complexes as a means of reducing greenhouse gases of LPG," he said.

Meanwhile, on the 28th, the second day of the Asia-Pacific DME Forum, a tour program was held for Bio Friends Chungbuk Boeun Plant and related equipment.
